Counting adult grasshoppers to estimate adult densities in an area in late summer (when grasshoppers are laying eggs) helps estimate the number of overwintering eggs. These late summer in-field adult counts provide data enabling the estimation of the ensuing risk of grasshoppers the following growing season. To count fully winged adult grasshoppers, sites should be surveyed between August 1st and September 1st.
