Wheat midge

In the fall, soil core surveys are performed in wheat stubble to assess the density of overwinter wheat midge cocoons which are later dissected to also determine parasitism rates. Data from the soil cores is used to prepare a prairie-wide forecast map predicting the risk of there potentially being economic levels of adults emerging somewhere in the region.
